To mark the celebration of the International Yoga Day on 21 June, Rondebosch East-based non-profit organisation Ananda Kutir Ashrama offered free classes to raise awareness about yoga last Friday.

The annual celebration aimed to share the broader concept of yoga teachings. The class was open to everyone.

Ashrama chairperson Swami Vidyananda says: “Normally people associate the word yoga with postures and sometimes with meditation. There are various branches of yoga that address the various aspects of human nature with the aim to harmonise the individual within (themselves) as well as with life and the supreme being.”

Vidyananda explains that it involves body, mind, emotions, an intellect and inner intelligence, adding when these are aligned, then the inner intelligence is awakened, and the individual will experience inner harmony, peace, love and wisdom.

He says through the various types of yoga the person will learn to live in harmony with society, in the spirit of selfless service.

Vidyananda says the primary objective is to share the teachings of integral yoga. Innumerable people have come over the 37 years of its existence to learn yoga according to their interests and inclinations. People who attend the classes, courses, workshops and retreats need not be members, as all are welcome.

He says they have two projects, an outreach project that provides sandwiches to Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV patients at the clinics in KTC, Philippi, Crossroads and Lower Crossroads and also gives clothing and Christmas hampers.

Vidyananda says the outreach project also offers free yoga classes in Maitland and Maitland Garden Village in collaboration with local community projects in these areas. They also offer free educare services at Children of Light Educare to children from informal settlements.
