Thieves caught in carjacking

2016-11-01 06:00

Three suspected car thieves were arrested within minutes of stealing the car of a resident of Rondebosch on Sunday 16 October.

In this incident ADT Security responded to an alarm in Birkett Road at around 22:00.

When officers arrived at the scene they noticed an unidentified suspect speeding away in a car and heard a gunshot.

“Our officer found the client in his driveway and asked him what had happened,” explains Jade Hanningof ADT Security.

“The client explained that when he pulled into his driveway, he was surrounded by a group of armed men who demanded that he hand them the keys to his car. It was the client’s next-door neighbour who saw what was happening and who fired the warning shot.”

A Rondebosch police patrol car stopped the stolen car coming out of Birkett Road and the suspect in the car was arrested.

Meanwhile, the armed response officer checked the client’s premises where two more suspects were found. They too were arrested by the police.

“We need to always be aware of our surroundings to identify any potential risks, while also looking out for each other,” says Hanning.

In a separate incident the next day, ADT also responded to an alarm in Greenbank Road in the early morning hours.

The client told the armed response officer that a burglar had gained access to her home by using a broom to lift keys off the table underneath a window.

The burglar allegedly fled after stealing a laptop and the client’s house keys.

“The officer searched the area and found an unidentified suspect hiding nearby, with keys and a laptop in his possession. Rondebosch police arrived and took the suspect into custody,” says Hanning.
