Three Hanover Park residents have been hit by stray bullets and a 29-year-old man has died.

Accordding to a report from Philippi police, the fatal incident occurred at 17:15 in  Moray Court on Tuesday (18 April). Police spokesperson, Captain Lance Goliath, says the 29-year-old man was hit after shots were fired by unknown gunmen in the vicinity where he was standing.

“The deceased sustained several gunshot wounds to his body and medics declared him dead on the scene. Seven spent cartridges were found on the scene. It is yet to be determined if the incident was gang related as it came to light that the deceased did not belong to any gang. Police are investigating a case of murder. The suspects are unknown and fled the scene on foot.”

Goliath says this incident followed an earlier incident at 11:40 on Tuesday where a 76-year-old woman was hit by a stray bullet and a 23-year-old man was shot and wounded in a shooting incident in Hanover Park Avenue.

"Both victims sustained gunshot wounds to their bodies and were taken to hospital for medical treatment. They are both in a stable condition. Five spent cartridges were found on the scene. The suspects are unknown and fled the scene on foot. We are investigating a case of attempted murder.”

Philippi police commander Colonel Dennis Abels condemned the killing and shootings and says police will maintain a zero tolerance approach against criminals. Several police units including Metro Police and Law Enforcement are currently deployed within the Hanover Park area to bring an end to the shootings.

He says the police have a reward system where money is given as a reward for information supplied to police about crime which results in the successful arrest and prosecution of criminals.

Anyone with information is urged to come forward and call Warrant Officer Ronald Koopman on 021 690 1517 or 073 171 6154.
