Time for elderly to shine

2016-06-07 06:00

Do you know of an elderly person who is making a profound difference in the community?

Then why not nominate them for a Community Champions Elders Award.

They may be feeding the hungry children in your street or knitting jearseys, blankets or teddies for babies in hospitals.

They may be running a soup kitchen for the homeless or even providing free lift clubs for their peers on social grant payout days or their weekly shopping trips.

People’s Post and Specsavers are looking to honour these elder gems who, despite their age, are still going out of their way to make a difference in the lives of others and continue to service their community.

The first People’s Post SpecSavers Community Champions Elders Award is set to take place on International Older Persons Day on 1 October.

Elder citizens from anywhere in the Cape who are making a difference in the lives of others can be nominated in two age catagories, ages 70-80 and 80 plus.

Nominations for the awards close on 20 July.

A panel of judges consisting of representatives from SpecSavers, SA Care Forum, People’s Post and it’s sister publications, TygerBurger and City Vision, will select three finalists in each category.

Finalists will be notified by 15 August and will thereafter be featured in People’s Post.

The winner in each catagory will be announced at a special High Tea held on 1 October on International Older Persons Day.

Wonderful prizes will be awarded to show the appreciation and affirmation to our three finalists in each category as well as the people who nominated the winners.

Nomination forms can be downloaded here  or from www.specsavers.co.za or the People’s Post Facebook page. Nomination forms are also available at the People’s Post office in Bellville and the following SpecSavers stores: Blue Route Mall, Wynberg, Maynard Mall, Cavendish Square, Rondebosch, Cape Town Station, Kenilworth Centre, Promenade, Westgate Mall, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Zevenwacht, Tygervalley, N1 City, Bayside, Parow Centre, Canalwalk and CapeGate.

The completed forms can be submitted by email to post@peoplespost.co.za, faxed to 021 910 6501, delivered to People’s Post, 3rd floor Bloemhof Building, 112 Edward Street, Tygervalley, Bellville or via post to P.O. Box 747, Bellville, 7535.
