Tips to avoid kidnapping

2016-03-15 06:00

Child kidnappings are a concern for the local police who are urging parents to talk to their children about these issues.

“Children must be taught to be aware of their surroundings at all times. For example to not play in isolated places on their own,” says police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Williams.

Other tips include:

. Children should preferably move in groups to and from school.

. Parents should make arrangements so that their children are not left waiting alone and for long periods for collection after school.

. Parents must teach their children to not talk to strangers, but rather to run away to safety when called by a stranger.

. Children must be encouraged to tell their parents or teachers about any incidents or suspicious people or cars that they might have observed loitering about schoolgrounds or on their walking routes.

. When confronted by a stranger or if any attempt is made to restrain them, children should shout out that they don’t know the person and call out for help as loudly as they can.

. Practise this shouting for help with your child.

. Do not leave your children without adult supervision at any time.
