Tips to stay safe

2018-10-23 06:01

In the interest of the community, Mitchell’s Plain police have released the following safety tips with regard to crimes present in the precinct.

Theft out of motor vehicles

Problem areas include Promenade Mall and the Town Centre and criminals are targeting delivery vehicles in most instances, say police.

. Ensure that the back of the vehicle is locked with a padlock where possible.

. Keep the back locked even when travelling short distances between offloading points.

. Have an escort vehicle available whenever possible.

. Inform police of suspicious-looking persons in the offloading vicinity.

Theft of dustbins

Police say theft involves mainly dustbins and domestic-related cases. The theft of dustbins continues to be a concern for residents, and residents are advised of the following points:

. All dustbins remain Council property.

. They are to be used for storage purposes (dirt collection) at the residence or business premises.

.Residents are advised to only put out their dustbins on bin collection day.

.Bins must never be used to transport/cart goods.

.Persons found in possession of a dustbin, being used for anything other than its intended purpose, can face criminal prosecution.

Safety at the beach

Mitchell’s Plain police cluster management have noted an increase in crime resulting from persons parking along isolated spots on the beaches in the area. This makes them vulnerable to carjacking, robbery, theft and other types of crime. Recently, tourists have also been targeted.

. Ensure the area where you are parked is safe.

. Be aware of your surroundings and keep your vehicle locked at all times.

. Ensure there are ample exit routes should the need for a getaway arise in any emergency.

. Avoid dense and high bushes where you are unable to see persons or vehicles approaching you.

. As far as possible stick to public spaces where there are officials on duty in case of an emergency.

. Try to move in a group as it is a safer option.
