Volunteers of the Mitchell’s Plain Disaster Risk Management Centre recently won two awards in an annual competition that pits volunteers against each other.

Twenty volunteer units took part in a first aid and fire fighting competition at the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Training Centre in Constantia on Saturday 20 October. The Mitchell’s Plain won the medical competition and came in third in the fire-fighting competition.

Each team consisted of four people and the teams responded to different life-threatening scenarios. The medical teams were given 10 minutes to stabilise a hazardous scene and treat three injured people. The fire-fighting teams had to roll up various hoses, use a fire hydrant and run 400m on uneven terrain and extinguish a fire.

The Mitchell’s Plain team wishes to thank all who had a helping hand in training, with special thanks to the Mitchell’s Plain Fire Department and unit coordinator Jacobus Peterson and the executives.
