About 200 people joined the Vanguard and Welcome Estates Neighbourhood Watch at its fundraising event held at Vanguard Primary School on Saturday 13 April.

The event was aimed at giving a financial boost to a security guard project operating in the area. The dress code was Egyptian attire and there were prizes to be won.

One of the winners, Farouk Perumal, a resident, applauded the watch for a job well done. “It was well organised and though I was sceptical about dressing up, my wife convinced me, and it turned out to be fun and rewarding,” Perumal said.

Talking about support for the fundraiser, he said initiatives like these bring the community together and allow them to speak in one voice, especially when it comes to fighting crime in the area.

He said it is not often that one gets to meet and mingle with the neighbours.

Naser Ally, head of the projects at the watch, described the atmosphere at the event. He said it was blissful, relaxed and “created an ideal setting for the evening where everyone, young and old, were left to sit back and engage with each other and catch up.”

He said using the concept of a dinner and entertainment could result in many positive outcomes, mentioning bringing the community together and showing the camaraderie among neighbours as one of those.

Ally said the watch also had an opportunity to raise awareness and show that they truly care “and will continue to put the needs of the community first.

It was clearly proved that together we can achieve more. We must continue to believe that we can share in our victories and stay undivided in our challenges.”
