A talented young woman from Bridgetown Theatre Company (BTC) landed herself a top spot in the 2018 Suidooster talent competition held at the Artscape Theatre late last month.

Carren Davids, a full-time employee at BTC, walked off with R10 000 after receiving the overall award out of more than 5000 participants, with her winning dance and poetry item called I Am Woman.

The act tells the story of a young woman who is told she is not good enough to be a dancer because of her weight, but she rises above her adversity to prove to herself that she is the best she can be, and the world must now learn to accept her for who she is – an imperfect woman with a perfect mindset.

The competition’s elimination process started in October last year and ended in a glittering gala show as part of the 2018 Suidooster Festival on Saturday 28 April.

Davids received her training in dance and drama at Belhar High School, and after Grade 12 she continued her studies at the University of Cape Town. In 2016 she joined BTC as a full-time employee and took on the role of an actor, dancer, director and choreographer.

To date she has performed in over 12 BTC productions. This includes the successful play A Mother’s Love at the Artscape Theatre. Davids was also the dancer and choreographer of her dance show, called Cube, at the 2017 Baxter Dance Festival.

Her most recent success as an actress was in the acclaimed BTC theatre production Teach One 2 Teach All.

This production was lauded by the over 40 000 people from across the Western Cape who saw the show.

With the generous sponsorship of the HCI Foundation and Golden Arrow Bus Foundation, BTC’s Davids and Kim Bowers are also now teaching dance and drama to learners at Athlone School for the Blind. They are set to participate in the upcoming Artscape Drama Festival later this year.
