Wondering where the locals go for their favourite steaks, pizzas, tapas and more?

No need, as the people’s favourite eateries, vetted by Eat Out’s critics, were announced at the 2018 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries celebration in Cape Town on Thursday 18 October.

After a year-long voting period and adjudication process, the top eateries in each category were determined by public ratings received via the Eat Out app and website (, in conjunction with scoring from professional Eat Out critics.

Several local eateries made it to the top of the list: SHIO in De Waterkant was named best Asian-inspired eatery, while Best Italian-inspired eatery is Giulio’s in the CBD. Kyoto Garden Sushi in Gardens was named best seafood eatery.

This is the fourth year the awards have been held, via public vote.

“These awards never fail to excite us, as we find out which restaurants inspire the most devotion among their fans,” says Linda Scarborough, editor of Eat Out.

“This year the easy-to-use Eat Out app made reviewing that much easier, so we could garner public opinion on as many South African restaurants as possible. We love reading about users’ dining experiences, and look to their star ratings to determine the shortlist,” says Scarborough.

“Our professional critics also review each eligible restaurant to determine the final winners in a 50-50 composite score.”
