Hundreds of residents from the Isiqalo Informal Settlement are currently demonstrating on Jakes Gerwel Drive blocking traffic.

The protest action started around 00:00 with burning tyres and blockades in the roadway.

The cause for the protest appears to be housing and services.

The road is currently between Morgenster and the R300.

It is alleged that at around 02:30 protesters also looted an atm at the garage on the corners of Jakes Gerwel and Higlands drive.

It was reported this morning that a Fruit & Veg store and a vehicle were set alight during the protests.

The area remains volatile at this stage.

Police and other law enforcement officials remain on scene.
