Trained to parent

A group of 15 residents have taken the first steps to becoming better parents by completing an eight-week training programme in Tafelsig.

The programme offered by the Parent Centre at the Tusong Centre finished on Friday last week.

The 15 mothers, fathers and grandparents from Tafelsig and surrounds were equipped with skills for better parenting.

“You can never graduate from the university of parenthood,” says Parent Centre facilitator Berenice Scott. “We will be parents until the day we die and we need this.”

The workshop covered topics such as discipline, problem solving, assertiveness and engaging cooperation, understanding children’s behaviour and feelings.

One participant, Tasneem de Wet, a mother of seven, says she learnt patience and discipline. De Wet started with the Parent Centre three months ago, as part of its parenting club.

“I must discipline myself before I discipline my children and I will stay positive and raise my children to the best of my ability,” she says.

Another participant, Edward Hendricks, who has a sight impairment, says the training was invaluable.

“For some of us the training came at the right time and for others it came a bit later in our lives. When I grew up it was about what the parents want; now we must adapt to what the child wants,” says Hendricks.

He adds that the training gave him the opportunity to be a better parent and to share what he has learnt with his community, especially the parishioners at the church he attends.

The Parent Centre also offers counselling, capacity building, teenager parenting and home visits.
