The multi-award winning local production Egoli – The Musical will tell the story of Madlamini and her colourful journey to the City of Gold at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg next week.

Written, composed and directed by rising star Bongani Titana, Egoli – The Musical pays homage to the resilient spirit of a woman. The central character Madlamini has to leave her home and rural village to search for her beloved husband in Egoli, the big city of Johannesburg, where he has gone to make his fortune – and gone missing in the process.

The cast of nine actors, including the the award winning Zikhona Jacobs and Ayanda Dukuse, bring to life a host of vibrant and eclectic characters that Madlamini meets on her trip.

Further flavour is added through the use of isiXhosa for much of the dialogue, with English narration. In classic musical style, the family-friendly story is told through vivid physical acting and original songs that showcase the rhythms and musical harmony of African culture.

Egoli – the Musical received standing ovations and a phenomenal four awards at the Zabalaza Theatre Festival 2015 including Best of the Festival, Best Musical Director, Most Outstanding Artist and the Outright-Faisit Award for Performance Excellence, and went on to be selected for the official program at the 2015 Cape Town Fringe festival.

The show is currently touring the Western Cape and will be at the Theatre Arts Admin Collective in Observatory until Saturday 10 September before it’s run at the Masque Theatre from Monday 12 until Saturday 17 September. The tour wraps up at the Novalis Ubuntu Institute in Wynberg on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 October. V For more information visit the Egoli – The Musical Facebook page.
