LETTER: Treat your pets well

2016-03-22 06:00

Once again the Easter weekend is on us. And the negligence of humans surfaces.

Please do not leave your pets unattended. Leaving extra food and water is not enough. If a friend or relative is coming daily to feed your pets, at least speak to a neighbour to make sure this person actually does come every day.

Make sure all gates are locked, not just closed. And leave a contact number next door in case you are needed.

Burglary is also something to keep in mind. Leave lights on outside and a few on inside. Ask the person checking on your pets to alternate inside lights.

Too many people in our suburbs think they are invisible or above being seen as idiots. We, as a community, must take a stand and learn to speak up against neglect and abuse in our areas. Too many people know about kids being abused and say nothing. We must stop being afraid to get involved. Speak out. Don’t be afraid of upsetting people.

Where animals are treated badly, the chances of human rights being violated are huge. Where children see it as being okay to be an abuser, in any form, they grow up not knowing any better.

In Kraaifontein we will be vigilant and report any cases of going away for the Easter weekend and not making the effort to make sure your pets are properly cared for. And dumping of animals is also becoming the new big thing!

Please let’s all have a lovely chilled and safe Easter and not forget about the comfort of our furred companions. After all, they never chose to be ours. We chose to have them.
