Two men were arrested after being handed over to police on Tuesday last week.

Strandfontein police registered a case of robbery on Monday 4 December at 05:25 in which a woman was robbed at gunpoint on the corner of North End and Dennegeur roads.

According to the victim, the robbers travelled in a Mini Cooper and fled the scene with the woman’s cellphone, cash and personal documents.

Station commander Captain David Malong says they followed up on information received from residents and the investigation led them to a house in Eastridge.

“Eight men were taken in for questioning and later released. On Tuesday the owner of the Mini Coper arrived with two possible robbers at the police station and handed them over. During interrogation, information was revealed of the whereabouts of the firearm,” says Malong.

Officers confiscated a 9mm Norinco pistol with the serial number filed off, eight 9mm rounds and one magazine.

The two were arrested and will appear in court soon.

None of the victim’s belongings were recovered.

“Street robberies in Strandfontein along the bus and taxi routes occur frequently and especially during early mornings. Although we, our street committees and neighbourhood watches are patrolling, we find that, especially amongst our women, victims display these items which is a catalyst for robberies,” says Malong.

“We want to express our thanks to the public who assisted with the initial information that led to the confiscation of this firearm: One firearm less on our streets.

“We would like to urge and educate our community to be vigilant this season with their surroundings. Get your timing right for your public transport so that you are not waiting long periods for it. Stand close to others, don’t carry too much valuables and be safe.”
