In less than five days, two people have been shot and killed in the Strandfontein area.

The community has been rocked by the shootings, which seem to have “popped up out of nowhere”, says Sandy Schuter, Strandfontein Community Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson.

She says they had just come to terms with the first shooting incident which took place on Friday 6 July when they were confronted with the most recent incident which took place in Denegeur Lane on Tuesday 10 July.

“At this point the investigation continues. Everything is still very sketchy,” says Schuter.

“[The victim] was shot multiple times and it was all at close range.”

The shootings come after a spate of stabbings in the precinct over the past two weeks.

“After the shooting on Friday, myself and the station commander went to all the youth affiliated with gangsters in the area and spoke to them. We know they are not gangsters but they are going around hurling gang slang and signs and running with them because they are idle at home,” she says.

“We realise that as a community, we need to do more to keep our children busy, but we need more communities to come on board to assist us. We have school leavers, unemployed youth, idle with nothing to do during the day. They then sit on the street corners. It is then our responsibility to take them off the street corners.”

Their message was clear, stating they did not want to see someone else being killed. Schuter adds their intervention seems to have paid off with many parents thanking the safety structures for their input.

With the first victim’s funeral being held on Saturday 7 July in accordance with Muslim rites, they had a weekend of meetings with various stakeholders and were not expecting another incident to occur in such a short period of time.

“We are angry, because as a CPF and the station, we are doing everything we can to prevent these, yet they are happening,” she says.

While the motives for the two incidents are still under investigation, Strandfontein police recovered two zip guns and ammunition in Strandfontein on Monday 10 July at 06:00.

Officers followed up on information received relating to the murder, which occurred in Leander Road, Bayview, on Friday.

These zip guns were found buried in the open field. No arrests have been made yet and an inquiry was opened. The zip guns were booked.

V Anyone with information on the incident is urged to call the Strandfontein Detectives on 082 469 3225. Anonymity is guaranteed.
