Police have obtained the successful conviction of a 16-year-old boy in connection with a 2015 case.

On Friday 10 March the Mitchell’s Plain Regional Court handed down a sentence in the case of the minor for the possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The incident occurred on 13 July at 13:00 when police were busy with patrols on the corners of Silversands and De Duin avenues when they spotted a boy sitting on the corner.

The boy acted suspiciously when he saw the police van and he was approached and searched.

Police found a firearm in the front of his pants under his t-shirt.

The firearm, a FEG 9mm pistol had seven 9mm short rounds in the magazine.

The accused was 14 years old at the time and was found guilty of possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition. He was sentenced to undergo 24 months of correctional supervision in terms of section 276(1)(h) of the Criminal Procedure Act as recommended by the correctional officers report. Both counts were treated as one for the purposes of sentence.

The accused is also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
