Unemployed people were assisted to register on the Lulaway database at the Cape Town Library on Thursday 18 July.The registration drive was held by the City of Cape Town’s Corporate Services Directorate in partnership with Lulaway. Lulaway is a workforce development project that assists young people with job readiness training and the City is in partnership with Lulaway.The public was shown how to use the computers with free internet in a city library. The internet is provided by SmartCape, a public access initiative by the City to increase digital literacy and skills for its residents, with a bias towards those who remain severely impacted by the digital divide. One of the City’s strategic focus areas is leveraging technology to improve the lives of residents. “The SmartCape programme was initiated in July 2002 when we had installed computers in six public libraries across the City, on a pilot basis. “Six months later there were3 000 registered SmartCape users. Today, there are over 450 000 registered users who can get up to 45 minutes of free internet use per session per day, across 670 computers in 104 libraries,” says Mayco member for corporate services, Sharon Cottle.This initiative has contributed towards growing computer literacy in communities across Cape Town. It is enriching the users’ knowledge and supports small business growth across the metro. Since the launch of SmartCape, it has also expanded its digital literacy efforts through various learner and training initiatives.SmartCape still remains the platform where many residents are exposed to the internet on a desktop for the first time.
