Use designated bus stop

In May this year, the City of Cape Town’s transport directorate relocated a bus stop that was originally located outside the Orkin building to a new location just 350m away.

The bus stop is now located just outside the Islamia College on Imam Haron Road, Lansdowne. Commuters are asked to use the new bus stop as buses may only stop at designated bus stops.

The City is urging all commuters to refrain from making use of the old bus stop on the corner of Imam Haron and Okiep Roads. Officials say many scholars and adult passengers continue to use the old stop, and go as far as forcing the bus to come to a halt by standing in the road as the bus approaches. This behaviour is extremely dangerous and cannot be condoned, says Felicity Purchase, Mayco member for transport.

“We are calling on all commuters to please proceed to the bus stop at the Islamia College. The bus drivers have been instructed to only stop at the new bus stop and that they should ignore those commuters who still choose to use the old stop outside Orkin,” says Purchase. “Not only is the new stop conveniently located at the Islamia College for the scholars, it is also a sheltered and safer location. We ask that these commuters please refrain from making the buses stop by standing in the road. Doing so is a huge safety risk, and one that we cannot ignore. We will continue monitoring the bus stop and will have to take further steps should this situation continue. Continued non-compliance is going to result in consequences.”
