Repairs have been carried out at the Elgin Circle park, following graffiti and vandalism which resulted in damage to the merry-go-round.

The repairs were carried out on Wednesday by the City of Cape Town’s recreation and parks department, says Eddie Andrews, Mayco member (South).

“While staff were repositioning the joy wheel, the Law Enforcement graffiti unit arrived and removed graffiti from the equipment. The equipment is due for its annual painting and repairs, scheduled to take place within the next month.”

The vandalism appears to have taken place over the weekend, says Andrews.

There have not been reports of similar vandalism at any other parks in the area, he adds.

“Vandalism is an ongoing concern for the City as it means diverting funds away from other priorities to replace and repair damaged infrastructure. Fortunately, in this case, the damage was minimal and was able to be fixed in one day,” he says.

No suspects have been identified, Andrews adds.

“Play parks are generally not fenced and we ask that residents in the immediate vicinity report any acts of vandalism to the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089.”
