Fire fighters are battling a vegetation fire at St Augustine's in Roscommon Road, Heathfield.Ward councillor Kevin Southgate confirms the fire was still raging at 16:20. He says it is however unclear at this stage what started the fire. "There has been a concern of vagrants using that piece of land lately, however, we are not sure if they have had a hand in the fire. The fire is close to the eco-centre and I have raised the issue of having controlled access. The securities are deep inside and can’t monitor what happens outside. The eco-centre is also being used as a thoroughfare by people who stay in Retreat and work in the Diep River area. We have also seen a lot of the homeless pushing their trolleys there and it’s a concern to us. "We are glad that the fire fighters are on scene and the fire will be contained. It doesn’t cause any risk to the eco-centre," says Southgate.
