Volunteers keep wheels spinning

Members of the Rotary Club of Claremont have recognised the role of volunteers in making a difference in their communities as part of celebrating International Volunteer Day on Tuesday 5 December.

The club’s president-elect, Malcolm Dodd, says it is important to celebrate the role volunteers play because they give their time and put in effort.

The club, for instance, volunteers at the Cape Town Cycle Tour.

“One of the greatest examples of what a group of volunteers can achieve when they get behind a single purpose is the Cape Town Cycle Tour. Over the years the race has grown, with a longer route and more and more cyclists entering, so we called on Rotarians from other clubs to join in to volunteer their time to help out on the day,” says Dodd.

He says next year they will have a record number of 485 volunteers from 35 different Rotary clubs committing a total of 21 011 volunteer hours before and on race day.
