More than a hundred homeless people on the streets of Maitland enjoyed a warm meal recently as neighbourhood watch members took it on themselves to collect donations of breads, cupcakes and soup packets from residents.

They prepared the food and served it on Saturday and Sunday. They handed out 150 cups of soup and 55 dishes of hot curry in areas such as Alexander and Ferndale roads, Section Street and Koeberg and Voortrekker roads. One of the beneficiaries, Bobby, says he has lived on the street for years and has always felt safe with the help of the neighbourhood watch. “It made us feel warm and comfortable while sleeping on the streets. We need the neighbourhood watch to keep us safe on the streets too,” says Bobby.

Graham Daniel, deputy chairperson of the neighbourhood watch, says they appreciate all the contributions to the soup drive.

“We have successfully fed about 150 less fortunate people: A cup of soup, bread and a cupcake. Hopefully our next drive could maybe be a blanket drive.”

He says seeing their living condition is just heart-breaking and they could not ignore the needy people living on the streets.
