In commemoration of World Aids Day on Friday, Mayco member (South) Eddie Andrews spoke at an event at the Town Centre.

World Aids Day is observed on 1 December annually.

The event hosted by the City of Cape Town included information stations and testing.

“Last year, this day and the period leading up to World Aids Day had a serious focus on ‘zero’: Zero discrimination and stigma, zero Aids-related deaths and zero new infections. This year the theme is ‘Right to know your status and prevention is my responsibility’. It’s a serious call to action as we are tasked as South Africans to ‘let our actions count’,” said Andrews.

“The City encourages every resident to know their HIV status by testing at least every 12 months and, if HIV positive, to take antiretrovirals (ARTs) consistently. HIV-testing services are freely available at every City health facility, with ARTs at 38 of these facilities and is in the process of expanding its ART footprint.”
