Western Cape Pelicans win national softball title

The Western Cape women’s team was crowned inaugural Softball South Africa Premier League champions after they beat Gauteng in the final at Turfhall on Saturday 1 June.

The league, the first of its kind in the history of softball in South Africa, was launched and started playing out last month.

The department of sport and recreation acknowledged the federation’s administration, leadership and compliance with the requirements, with the federation of the year award last year.

After a series of the playoff games that took place in Gauteng and Limpopo, three senior women provincial teams namely, Gauteng Roses, Limpopo Dinose and Western Cape Pelicans qualified to participate in the finals.

In the men’s section, the provincial teams which qualified for the finals were the Gauteng Spears, the KZN Heats and the Limpopo Dinare, with the latter being crowned champions.

Mashilo Matsetela, the president of Softball South Africa, said: “We are also proud to announce that three of our national softball teams will be going to represent South Africa against the world’s best at international tournaments.”

The South African senior softball men’s national team will travel to the Softball World Championships in Prague from Thursday 13 June to Sunday 23 June.

The senior South African softball women’s team will represent the country at the Africa/Euro Olympic Qualifiers from Tuesday 23 to Saturday 27 July in Utrecht, Netherlands.

The u.19 South African junior women’s softball national team will represent the country at the World Championships in Irvin, America from Saturday 10 August to Saturday 17 August.

“Softball South Africa would like to take this opportunity to thank the City of Cape Town for supporting the game of softball. We also wish to thank Western Cape Softball and the Cape Town Softball Association for their support in hosting the Softball South Africa Premier League finals,” concluded Matsetela.
