LETTER: Where have the whales gone?

2016-11-22 06:00

Every year I really look forward to seeing our friendly visitors popping in for a wee while...

How come I never even saw one whale this past season? Is there a problem visiting False Bay rather than Walker Bay?

Will the Whale Watchers tell us, or should False Bay (Fish Hoek) put on a grand Whale Festival too?

I have been living in Fish Hoek nigh on 20 years now and this has got to be the poorest whale season I have ever experienced.

Usually wherever you went, you could go to Kalk Bay over Boyes Drive and there they were. Go to Simon’s Town and there they were dropping in at the small Glencairn beach. On the way to Hermanus, there they were along the coastline to Pringle Bay and  Gordons Bay. The whales always had a spot in Sunny Cove and visited the same spot every year. It was a really good viewing point.

I am an estate agent and, sadly, I can no longer tell buyers that we are a whale-friendly resort. My family often contacted me to come through and see the whales, but not this year.

But then again, we had a grand view of the rising supermoon the other night with literally hundreds of people at the beach and lining along Boyes Drive (in spite of a rip-roaring South Easter).
