Winter drive for the homeless

2018-07-17 06:00

The Groote Schuur Community Improvement District (GSCID) has embarked on its annual Winter Warmer Drive.

GSCID collected scarves and beanies donated by the Mowbray police and non-perishable food items from residents in the jurisdiction of Little Mowbray and Rosebank Improvement District.

Items will be distributed to homeless people working within the GSCID Straatwerk programme tomorrow, Wednesday 18 July, as part of Mandela Day celebrations.

Nina Farrell, GSCID’s manager, says: “We will only be giving to the homeless people working on the Straatwerk programme as this encourages responsible giving.

“We would like to ensure that the homeless people staying within our boundary stay dry and warm this winter.”

The Winter Warmer Drive forms part of the GSCID’s social outreach programme and aims to raise awareness of issues and practically help those on the street during the winter months..

“We are proud to continue this annual initiative to help those around us who are truly in need,” says Farrell. “We are hopeful that the donations we receive will go some way to helping those less fortunate in our area this winter.”

She says any donations of warm winter wear and blankets are still welcome.V Donations can be dropped off at the GSCID offices in Main Road, Mowbray.
