LETTER: Wonderful Wayde now a need to nurture

2016-03-15 06:00

When it comes to a world that needs some wonderful news then the achievements of Wayde van Niekerk over the weekend is a cherry on the cake that has seen too many tribulations.

The first man, a South African, a Capetonian by all accounts, to go under 10 seconds in the 100m, under 20 in the 200 and under 44 in the 400m ... what an achievement.

While we celebrate this milestone, let us be mindful of the many Waydes out there who may never be given the opportunity to reach these heights. The time has come for a much stronger focus on getting athletics the attention it deserves. Too many of our treasures are lost because the support system for prospective stars is non-existent.

We need to give our athletes a chance to shine more prominently on local shores. Where are the athletics leagues of yesteryear?

There’s a need for regular meets and major sponsorship to take a new generation to new heights on track and field.
