Good Samaritans have been warned to be cautious following a murder in Gardens last weekend.

The murder took place while a man was chasing a suspected mugger.

Last Saturday, a 28-year-old man was stabbed in the neck in Wilkinson Street, Gardens after giving chase with local security guards to arrest a suspect who allegedly accosted two women on Kloof Street, confirms Cape Town Central police spokesperson Captain Ezra October. The stabbing took place at around 05:30.

“The victim was assisted by other witnesses to stop the bleeding but he succumbed due to neck injuries on the crime scene,” says October.

The women had reportedly tried to return a truck driver’s wallet which had fallen to the ground.

The 20-year-old suspect was arrested and handed over to Cape Town Central police, October says. A case of murder is being investigated.

In light of the stabbing, October has called on community and neighbourhood watch members to “understand and follow” standard operating procedures “by working in teams to be the eyes and ears of the police”.

“Report and communicate incidents of crime to the Watchcom centre,” he says.

“Alert the neighbourhood watch office via communication systems regarding suspicious behaviour of any suspicious persons. Also inform your local police station or patrol vehicle regarding suspicious people in your area.”
