‘Work with us’ – cops

2017-02-28 06:01

Steenberg police are calling on the public in their precinct to speak up when it comes to fighting crime in their area.

Steenberg police spokesperson Warrant Officer John Bartlett says community members are valuable sources of information.

“We are asking our community members to be involved by being the eyes and ears of the police. They are there when things are happening and they are always informed.”

Community members are urged to organise neighbourhood watches and street and court committees, join the local community policing forum or become a reservist.

“Also take initiative over graffiti in your areas. Painting over graffiti sends a positive message to gangs that their behaviour will not be tolerated.”

Bartlett also encourages the youth to take part in recreational activities. “Recreational programmes such as sports, music, drama and community activities help built a sense of self-worth and self-respect in the youth.”

Bartlett says the partnership between police and the public can yield positive results.

“Don’t give gangs a chance and let us work together to stamp out crime in our areas and create safer communities.”
