Students on the False Bay Yacht Club Youth (FBYC) training course are preparing for the sailing season by giving their craft a complete overhaul.

The two L26 training yachts, “Hooligan” and “Homero”, were hauled onto land and are given a thorough overhaul. This involves the deck fittings being checked for wear-and-tear and replaced if necessary. The hull fittings are checked for leaks or deterioration and fixed and the interior is being spruced up and painted. The entire hull is also sanded and anti-fouled.

Linsay Oberholzer, the FBYC sailing manager who runs the youth training initiative, explains: “By getting the youngsters involved in refurbishing their training boats, they gain an understanding of the importance of maintaining a yacht to achieve the required safety standards,” she says.

“They also gain an understanding of how big of an impact good maintenance has on performance on the water”.

She added that this degree of involvement is also an important part of the team building process and gives the students a real sense of pride in their craft.

The FBYC is situated in King George Way in Simon’s Town.
