Yanks finally pull one through

After weeks of coming second best in close games against opponents above them on the BAWP major league table, Westridge did well to beat Crusaders 8-5 at the Stephan Reagan Oval in Mitchell’s Plain on Saturday.

Even though Crusaders accumulated more hits off Westridge’s two pitchers – Dean Martin (2.2 Inn, 6 Hits, 5 Runs) and Jayson Ripepi (6.1 Inn, 2 Hits, 0 Runs) – it was the 14 base on balls by their three pitchers – Jarrod Williams (5.1 Inn, 3 Hits, 3 Runs, 7 BB), Sergio Thomas (1 Inn, 1 Hit, 0 Runs, 4 BB) and Kyle van der Ross (1.2 Inn, 1 Hit, 4 Runs, 3 BB) – that came back to bite them.

Westridge scored four runs in the second innings, three in the seventh and a single run in the eighth. Crusaders scored all of their runs in the third innings.

Ripepi did really well to shut out Crusaders in his pitching stint. He also hit a solo home run which contributed immensely to the team’s victory.

Luwayne du Plessis and Gwyn Petersen were the other hitters from Westridge who made notable contributions.

Crusaders’ best hitters were Aiden O’Connor, Jamie Mauritz and Leeroy Adriaanse.

Wesley Rushin from Westridge was ejected from the game in the eighth inning for showing unsporting behaviour.

A dominant pitching performance by Carl Michaels (8 Inn, 1 Run, 5 Hits) helped Athlone A’s secure a hard-fought victory of 3-1 over archrivals Durbanville.

Michaels was well-supported on the offensive side by the Moosa brothers, Riyaad (2-4 and 2 stolen bases) and Faizel (1-4, 2B hit, 3 RBIs). It was Faizel’s game-winning two-base hit in the sixth inning that accounted for the three runs by the A’s. Lloyd Stevens got the last three outs only facing the hitters.

Durbanville failed to take advantage of four errors by the A’s. Both teams left five runners on base.
