Remember the name Gino Lee, because sooner rather than later the songs of this young man from Century City will be on everyone’s lips.

His first step to local success was winning the Vangate Mall Local Is Lekker singing competition on Saturday.

Competition judges had a tough time as Gino and nine other finalists, Thulani Fesi, Lance “Vezz” Fortuin, Charl Hudsonberg, Kevin Jacobs, Krista Jonas, Natasha Plaatjies, Natalie Shannon, Christon Southgate and Tasneem Williams, competed for the top spot in front of nearly 2000 people at the Local Is Lekker Music Festival.

While Gino was a crowd favourite from the start, all ten finalists found supporters in the audience.

Making it through to the top five were Gino, Natasha, Natalie, Christon and Krista. They were given a second chance to win the hearts of the crowd and the judges.

In the end it was Gino with his original song, “Back to me”, that came out tops, while Natasha sang her way to second place.

One of the judges, Gary van Dyk, a People’s Post reporter and music enthusiast, says all the entrants should continue to share their voices with the world.

“The talent is there; you can take it further despite not winning. One thing the competition proved is that there is a new generation of singers waiting to take to the stages around town. And who knows, some are destined for the world stage if given the opportunity.”

Also making their appearance on stage was local musicians Robin Peters, Nur Abrahams and Loukmaan Adams who had the crowd singing and dancing along with some fan favourites and pure Cape Town ghoema grooves.

The music festival was presented by Vangate Mall in partnership with People’s Post, KFM, Vodacom and Coca-Cola.
