A Cape Town girl came out top at the Western Cape District trials for rhythmic gymnastics held on Sunday 9 June.

Ella Goddard won a gold medal for competing with a hoop, bronze for freehand and came third overall for Level 7 in the u.15 category.

“I was very happy. I am not someone who gets upset when I do not come first. All I want is get onto the podium.”

The 14-year-old girl told People’s Post she has only started doing gymnastics when she was 10 and has since received over 20 medals for the sport.

“I used to do artistic gymnastics, which is very different from rhythmic gymnastics but fell in love with rhythmic gymnastics because I can express myself with the apparatus.

“It is very different from ‘normal’ sports and dance,” she said.

Last year, after winning the Western Cape u.13 category she was afforded an opportunity to compete in the SA Gymnastics competition where she won a medal.

She said: “I came third overall for my freehand and ended up winning fifth overall in South Africa u.13.”

Goddard said that she wants to continue competing in gymnastics for as long as she could.

“Apart from that, I plan to travel after I complete school and study towards becoming a dermatologist.”

She also plays soccer, netball and does athletics.

Goddard also said she could not have achieved so much without the support of her family.
