It was a glitzy affair as friends, family and residents came together to celebrate the crowning of Mr Magnificent Icon (MMI) Phenomenal South Africa, on Saturday 29 June.

The event was organised and hosted by Mitchell’s Plain-based Shumeez Scott Foundation (SSF).

The foundation is named after the reigning queen of the Miss Magnificent Woman Icon (MWI) Phenomenal International title. The foundation caters for children who are living with Down Syndrome and does empowerment activities such as skills in massage, manicure, pedicure to give the children the dignity they deserve.

People were dressed to the nines and filled the Bonteheuwel Civic Centre to celebrate Nabeel Oostendorp’s (23) moment of glory.

The crowning event was filled with feasts, dance and music,

Bahia Janodien, chief executive officer (CEO) for SSF, urged parents to allow their children to live their best potential. She says one person with outstanding person is chosen among children with Down Sydrome and crowned as the winner.

She encouraged audiences to support children and bring them to the foundation where they will be shown love and respect.

“All these kids want is to be accepted by the society and we will not wait for the society to come to them, we will go to the society,” said Janodien.

She appealed to parents to treat children with the condition as normal and added they had no limits.

She furthermore requested the attendees to help the foundation grow and added they need a space where they can operate.

According to her, when they started they only had two children, now they have over 29, and that highlights a need for a studio.

Before handing over to the master of ceremonies (MC) she briefly described the man of the moment as someone who is selfless. She said he always makes it a point that other children are attended to before him.

“He will come to me and ask, did you eat?,” she shared.

The event was attended by a number of beauty queens and kings which included Shumeez, and Johan Daniels, who is the current Mr SA Mr Heart title holder.

Daniels said he was honoured to be part of the event to celebrate with Nabeel. His message to him was to never doubt himself.

“I want him to believe that things will work out,” he said.

Daniels, a Paarl based model, described his title as one that is charity orientated.

Nabeel was flanked by his family and they all had great things to say about him.

His older sister Nabeelah Oostendorp said her brother is the sweetest. She said she is overwhelmed and excited for him on his big day. She described him as caring and the type of a sibling who does almost all the house chores without complaints.

“I wish him well, I want him to stay the person that he is. I see now he is doing things he has never done before just like being crowned,” she said.

His father, Ismael Oostendorp also had positive things to say about his son, whom he is proud of.

He said he is very excited about what is happening for his son. He described him as a good boy who loves soccer.

The man of the moment did not have much to say except to wave at the jovial crowd. He also danced to the music and to the local band that played music in show of support for their homeboy.

The foundation also thanked the sponsors and said without their support the event would not have succeeded.
