At the Grassy Park Rowing Club, speed is of the essence.

Started as a school rowing club at Grassy Park High School in 2014 it is now part of a development programme growing the sport of rowing in underprivileged communities.

One of the coaches at the club, Duncan Hager, explains that since starting the interest grew and they opened the club to learners from all the schools in Grassy Park, Lotus River and Zeekoevlei.

“We’re really open to all youth who are interested in the sport,” he says. “Our main aim is to show youth in our communities what opportunities are available to them to keep them away from negative influences.

“We are based at Zeekoevlei at the yacht club and while there is a fun and sociable side to the club, there is also a very competitive side to the activity.

“There are many classes of rowing but it all involves hard work through practise and teamwork to show them how much they can achieve if they apply themselves.”

Hager says the club takes part in regattas across South Africa, even getting the Club of the Year Award at the recent South African schools/clubs rowing championships.

“We would like more young people to join us and discover the joys of this sport,” he says.

Anyone from 13 to 18 years interested in joining the club can see their activities on Facebook or on their website.
