Artscape Theatre has invited Bridgetown Theatre Company (BTC) and four high schools that are part of the BTC programme to showcase their plays. The mini high school drama festival runs until Friday. The four high schools are; Bridgetown High School, Athlone High School, Peak View High School and Athlone School for the Blind.

BTC has decided to offer free teaching in drama, dance and music to fill the gap of the school curriculum which is not catering enough for drama, dance and music as a subject. BTC feels there are many artistic learners at these schools and this will be an opportunity to explore that side of them.

BTC teachers are Celeste Williams who does music, singing and band teaching, Caren Davids who teaches drama, Amy Du Plooy who does dance training and Ziona Theron who is the coordinator at the four schools from Monday to Friday during school hours, after school and on Saturdays.

According to a statement, being part of the festival will give BTC the opportunity to develop the learners as a whole, not just academically but artistically too. “This is to give them an opportunity to explore their creativity in not just performance but also in directing, scriptwriting and develop towards becoming self-respected and balanced individuals. This will also help them to make informed career choices based on their talents and educational knowledge,” read the statement.

The festival will serve as the audition for the main High School Drama Festival from Saturday 17 to Monday 19 August at Artscape. At this festival, prize money of R 1000 will be allocated per winning school in the following categories: Best Actor; Best Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Technical, Best Script, Best Play and the Adjudicator award.V For more information contact Ziona Theron at 072 800 7141 .
