Member of provincial parliament Ricardo MacKenzie and provincial minister for social development Albert Fritz hosted a youth camp in Melkbosstrand from Monday 3 to Wednesday 5 December.

This youth opportunity camp was specifically aimed at youth who will not be attending university and included youth from various areas, including Mitchell’s Plain.

The purpose of the camp was to introduce the youth and matriculants to the world of work.

The youth were addressed by the Department of the Premier and its Premier’s Advancement of Youth (PAY) team.

The camp was also addressed by several provincial ministers who shared internships in their departments.

These ministers included health MEC Dr Nomafrench Mbombo and human settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela.

Education MEC Debbie Schäfer spoke about education and motivated the youth to work hard as they are now the future role models.

Mackenzie says: “I know we have a lot of matriculants that are not going to university and I wanted to make these opportunities available to them so they don’t idle at home. I wish I could have taken 1000 matriculants but only had funding and assistance for 100. This camp was a success and [we are] already working on getting more youth on board next year. The matriculants were disciplined and well-behaved, except a few who went to bed late, but overall they were extremely well-behaved. I am looking forward to see the future leaders of this country coming from this team as they were extremely well-behaved and showed leadership skills. I hope with some of the skills they learned they should now be able to assist others who did not go on the camp.”

Fritz says: “Youth development is key for this government, and giving these youth access to opportunities will ensure that we have a better Mitchell’s Plain and a better Cape Town and ultimately a better South Africa.”

This camp exposed the youth to the many opportunities available and all other youth in Mitchell’s Plain are invited to visit westerncape.gov.za/PAY where they can also apply for internships at these departments.
