In a bid to see Strandfontein youth getting active, a few sports groups came together last week to organise a two-day event.

Organised by the Strandfontein Facilities Management Committee, the 200 children enjoyed games and fitness demonstrations at the Strandfontein Sports Complex on Wednesday, followed by a beach day at the Strandfontein Pavilion on Thursday.

“We wanted to do something to keep the youth active and away from negativity,” says Robert Quinn, chairperson of the committee. “We wanted to go to the beach to promote that lifestyle. We are a coastal community, but we don’t have that culture.”

The second day saw angling, lifesaving, NSRI and surfing demonstrations.

The group received some assistance from the City of Cape Town’s Come and Play unit and various sports codes that make use of the facilities, including netball and soccer.

Samantha Johnson from Dance Fitness with Sam and Carla Combrinck and Robyn Garcia from Kinevibe Fitness also ran fitness sessions with the children.
