THE Genesis Leadership Academy in Marburg hosted its annual community soccer tournament recently.

The community and local high schools were invited to participate in the round-robin event with six-a-side teams in two divisions - U16 and U21.

Genesis said it was overwhelmed by the response from the teams.

and#034;We could only accommodate 20 teams and were forced to turn away a few,and#034; said operations manager, Joann Govender.

Teams that took part included girlsand#039; teams from Creston College and the Phumlani Mzobe Foundation who displayed amazing skill.

The tournament ended with Hibberdene Academy taking home the Good Sportsmanship trophy and Suid-Natal showing excellent team spirit.

Bafanas won the U16 division and received the overall runner-up prize of a full soccer kit, sponsored by Hibiscus Coast Municipality Youth Development.

PSG were runners-up. Grassroots and Merlewood Secondary put on a good performance in the semis going from a draw to a penalty shoot-out and on to and#034;sudden deathand#034;, with Grassroots emerging the U21 victors taking home the winners cup and the main prize.
