Can’t see beyond own selfishness

2015-04-30 14:54

THE arguments the proponents of monkey culling have so many contradictions and such contorted arguments, including references to old lawn mowers, respiratory disease and Genesis, and now in the latest spat, slavery, Guy Fawkes, blood donations, malnutrition and guttering, that I wonder where to begin and end.

To cut the nonsense short, I will deal only with the issue of slavery raised by El Lobo who argues that because concern for animals existed during the period in which slavery was practised, the evidence is that animals were considered “more important” than humans.

If El Lobo had any understanding of history and reasoning, it would be clear that the people who fought against the abuse of animals also fought against slavery, for the obvious reason that these people were empathetic and compassionate.

The point that El Lobo tries to use to support his pathetic argument actually proves the converse. The crux of this whole argument is empathy, compassion, a respect for others’ welfare. It is not the mind of Susan Henderson that is in a cage, but the minds of Schulenburg, El Lobo and their ilk who cannot see beyond their own selfishness. This is precisely the empathetic deficiency that allowed and continues to condone slavery. Henderson is way ahead of her time. The monkey culling mentality is way behind.
