A COSMETIC thief could get away from mall security, but he couldn’t escape the grasp of a dedicated car guard who apprehended him shortly after he committed the deed.

On Friday at about midday, a young man was caught stealing cosmetics from Clicks in the Hibiscus Mall in Margate.

Mall security gave chase, but the man ran into the parking lot towards the health centre.

Vusumzi Radebe, a car guard, heard the security guard shout: “Thief, thief. Catch him.”

“That’s all I needed to hear and I decided to run after the man,” said Radebe.

He said other guards also joined in the chase, but he (Radebe) managed to catch the man.

“I restrained the man until the security guard got there.

“The guard then took the man back to Clicks and notified the authorities,” he said.

Radebe, who has been working at the Hibiscus Mall as a car guard for three years, is loved by all who frequent the shopping centre.

“I know him as Vusi and he is always so helpful,” said regular shopper Greg Bouwer.

“He’s always so ready to assist, especially the elderly.”

Radebe said he was only doing his bit to fight crime and that thieves should know they will not be tolerated at the mall
