UMZUMBE community members say “no” to hunger snf take every opportunity to make a living.

The Ward 12 community have started a shoe polish- manufacturing project - Siyazama Shoe Polish Co-Operative - and make shoe polish from scratch.

The project is sponsored by a non-profit Pietermaritzburg organisation, Africa Co-operative Action Trust (Acat), which who supplies them with ingredients.

Acat agricultural development officer, Wonder Zikalala, said they assist co-operatives by providing them with organic and inorganic materials.

“We sponsor Siyazama Shoe Polish Co-operative with ingredient to make their product. We give them candles, paraffin and oxide which are the basic ingredients to make polish.”

Zikalala said supporting such co-operatives assists communities to make a living through agriculture.

Thandekile Nzimande, Siyazama Co-operative chairperson, said they have 50 members with a majority of them being elderly women.

“We have just started making our products and we are selling them in our community,” said Nzimande

She said basically they make the polish in big containers and when someone places an order they put the polish into smaller containers as orders come in.

Nzimande said they have had a good response and received support from the Umzumbe community.

They are hoping for bigger orders from the South Coast community in order to sustain the business she said.

Orders can be placed by phoning her on 073 540 10644
