Cops arrest robbers within minutes

THREE of the five perpetrators who robbed a woman at a shop in Victory Road on Wednesday will appear in court soon.

The complainant told police that three men arrived at the store and one of them bought cigarettes.

“After a while, the same three suspects and two others came in again and one walked around the counter,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandrd Wiid.

The man placed his hand over her mouth so that she could not scream, but she managed to press the panic button and the alarm was activated.

All five fled.

The complainant later discovered that her cellphone was missing.

Warrant Officer PC Naicker, who responded to the scene, was stopped by members of a security company who pointed out a suspect that was found in the bush on Oscar Borchers (sugar mill) Road

The suspect fitted the description of one of the five robbers.

Naicker searched him and found the complainant’s cellphone and cigarettes in his possession and he was taken into custody.

By that time, police members from various units arrived and searched the area for the remaining suspects. Constable Joseph Cele from the K9 Unit and Constable Bongani Ciliza from the Port Shepstone Tactical Response Team went down an embankment towards a stream where they searched for the men.

They then spotted one of the culprits hiding under the bush.

He was arrested and taken into custody.

“Sergeant Mbuso Ndlovu from the K9 Unit was waiting on the road when he saw a suspect fitting the description running from underneath a bridge,” said Wiid.

“Mbuso stopped the suspect and he was also taken into custody.

The trio will be detained and face charges of business robbery.
