Developmental agenda in Ugu district

THE National Council of Provinces (NCOP) undertook an oversight visit to Ugu district from 22 to 23 July. Delegates went on a two-day visit under the theme “Advancing the developmental agenda of municipalities for a better life for our people”.

The three municipalities - Ugu District, Hibiscus Coast and Umuziwantu - were visited and provided the opportunity for the NCOP delegation and the legislature to get reports from the municipalities on progress made in service delivery.

It also provided the NCOP delegation with the opportunity of receiving first-hand information and a detailed account of progress made by municipalities in advancing the lives of communities in keeping up with our constitutional imperatives.

Ugu district’s municipality presented its service delivery progress on its key deliverables of water and sanitation milestones.

It was noted during the presentation that through the district municipality water projects, 86% of our communities have access to clean drinking water.

The district municipality also highlighted that 93% of our communities have access to basic sanitation services.

This Provincial Week visit focus was to create a platform for NCOP members to examine­ the state of local government in response to the developmental mandate, service delivery and institutional capacity.
