A FEEDING scheme in Merlewood is doing all it can to ensure that children from poor households in the area get at least one decent meal a week.

Run by Rajen Mahabeer, the Hibiscus Food for Life feeding scheme provides about 400 plates of food to children every Saturday at Hlanganani Primary.

“These children come from unemployed households where some of them live in extreme poverty. In many cases this is the only meal these children get for the weekend,” said Mahabeer.

The project has been running for five years and depends entirely on donations.

“We rely on the community for funding and we appeal to them to please donate monthly so we can feed these starving children,” said Mahabeer.

The project costs R8 000 a month to run. Those willing to make a contribution can contact Mahabeer on 082 836 2758.
