THE owner of the horse shot and killed by South Coast farmer Stephen Brand said she is donating the R10 000 awarded to her by the court to the Coastal Horse Care Unit.

Amy Hemingway’s 40-year-old horse was shot and killed in Bushy Vales in November last year after apparently trespassing into Brand’s sugar-cane field.

The war veteran horse was bred in South West Africa and served during the border war.

When appearing at the Ramsgate Magistrate’s court last Tuesday, Brand said the horse had damaged his plantation. Hemingway doubts this as the elderly horse was left with only four teeth in its mouth.

“Ash was being fed three meals a day as he could no longer graze,” said Hemingway. Brand was found guilty of malicious damage to property and cruelty to animals.

A tree will be planted at the premises of the care unit in memory of Ash.
