FAMILIES are still coming out in great numbers to catch shad at Sandpits, Port Shepstone. When the Fever went to the area on Sunday some fishermen and women had been there since the day before. Devin Naicker drove all the way from Harding and said it was worth it. “I’ve had some fantastic catches here and I’ve never caught so much fish in my life.” The shad came after the sardine run two weeks ago. Whales were seen as the water has cooled enough for them to feed.

Ronald Mathuray of KZN Fishing said the shad should be around until August if the conditions are right and if anglers don’t exceed the limits.

The shad legal limit is four per person and must not be less than 30cm in length.

“We need to sustain the current stocks to make sure we don’t kill off the shad,” said Mathuray.
