Heritage or braai?

2015-10-01 06:00

I REALLY feel that the concept of Heritage Day is about celebrating our diverse cultures and uniting as South Africans of all colours and backgrounds.

Some people call this National Braai Day, which makes the day lose its significance and value.

How can a braai be celebrated? Yes, it does unite families and friends around the braai, but it says nothing about our collective culture.

Before this day was called Heritage Day it was called Shaka’s Day and after some years it changed to Heritage Day, so all cultures would be accommodated.

A braai is something that anyone can have in their backyard and it has nothing to do with uniting the nation and celebrating its diversity.
