MARINERS Portuguese Food, Wine and Family Festival celebrated all things Portuguese at Mac Banana’s Food Emporium at the weekend.

The turn-out could have been better was it not for the cold and muddy conditions patrons had to brave.

A variety of authentic food and craft stalls offered traditional food from every corner of Portugal where the Prego was invented, with a variety of wine, brandy and beer on offer.

Despite the weather Mariners celebrated on Saturday and Sunday, where everyone joined in a mass prayer in commemoration of the passengers of Portuguese ship, Sao Jaoa, which was wrecked on rocks outside Port Edward in 1552.

The ship was on a return journey from India when it got caught in a fatal storm, killing 126 passengers, including Princess Leonora de Sousa.

The lives of the shipwreck victims are celebrated throughout this two-day event.

While parents enjoyed the festivities, children were entertained by Wozani Kids Entertainment, sponsored by Fanta.

Children’s activities included face painting, jumping castles, colouring-in competitions and a bungee jump.

There was also an array of hand-made items at the arts and crafts market alongside the nursery and landscaped display gardens
